“My wife has never washed my clothes since we got married” — Pastor Philip Olubakin explains why women are beaten in relationships

Philip Olubakin, a Nigerian clergyman, has ignited debate online after expressing his views on marriage, financial independence, and household obligations.

In a widely shared statement on social media, the pastor stated that he hasn’t washed his clothes in almost a decade, instead relying on laundry services since completing law school.

He believes that household responsibilities should not impede a woman’s intellectual or professional development.

When asked about his lifestyle, Olubakin said he purposefully avoids imposing traditional home obligations on his wife.

“I can’t remember the last time I washed my clothes. By the time I entered law school, I was already giving my clothes out for laundry. All through my service year and for the past 12 years, I haven’t washed my clothes myself,” he said.

He also mentioned that his wife has never washed his clothes, indicating that he prefers to outsource such jobs.

The preacher emphasised the necessity of financial independence in marriage, especially for women.

When he needed money quickly, he begged his wife to lend him ₦1 million to donate as a seed to a revered man of God in the hospital.

I want to have a wife that can borrow me one million. That’s a kingdom marriage,” he stated

Olubakin also advised women to establish financial independence for themselves, cautioning that relying on a man might make relationships tough.

According to him, women who rely solely on their boyfriends for fundamental requirements may find it difficult to make independent judgements within relationships.

His views have now elicited conflicting reactions online, with some complimenting his emphasis on financial independence and others questioning certain aspects of his remarks.
