“My friend secretly married my fiancée and moved into the house I rented” — Man tells court

A businessman, Abdullahi Jibril, has taken his former fiancée, Mariam Ibrahim, and his friend, Haruna Likita, to court in Nasarawa State over allegations of cheating, breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and threats to his life.

Jibril reportedly filed a direct criminal complaint against the duo at the Upper Area Court in Mararaba on October 27, accusing them of conspiring against him and moving into a house he allegedly rented in preparation for their planned marriage.

Both defendants, who reside in Mararaba, are facing charges including criminal conspiracy, cheating, breach of trust and threat to life.

Businessman recounts alleged betrayal

According to Jibril, the incident began in 2025 when his former fiancée allegedly deceived him into attending a marriage ceremony at the residence of his friend, Likita.

He told the court that he later discovered that his friend had secretly married his fiancée despite their existing relationship and his preparations to marry her.

Jibril further alleged that the two defendants subsequently moved into the house he had rented for himself and his former fiancée.

“My friend went behind me and married my fiancée, and they both moved into the house I rented for us,” he told the court.

The businessman also claimed that the pair continued occupying the property and using household items he had purchased in preparation for his planned marriage.

Jibril alleges threats over court case

Jibril, who reportedly resides in Rugan Juli, Mararaba, further accused his former friend of threatening him after he decided to pursue the matter legally.

He alleged that the defendants had continued living in the rented house while using the belongings he had acquired for the relationship.

“The second defendant is now threatening me for taking the matter to court,” the complainant said.

The allegations were presented before the court as part of the direct criminal complaint filed against the two defendants.

Defendants plead not guilty

When the matter came up before the court, Ibrahim and Likita pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

The presiding judge, Malam Mohammed Shomo, subsequently granted each defendant bail in the sum of ₦200,000.

The judge also directed each defendant to provide one surety in the same amount as part of the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned until November 10 for hearing.

The allegations against the defendants have yet to be established in court, and the proceedings are expected to continue on the adjourned date.
