Aisha Yesufu, a prominent activist, has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory after the party decided not to have primaries for the position.
The announcement on Friday officially ends her bid to represent the FCT in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
According to Yesufu, the party has decided not to hold internal polls for the senatorial ticket in the FCT, which obviously changes the political calculations surrounding the contest in Abuja.
“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!” she said.
Despite withdrawing from the campaign, Yesufu asked her followers not to be disappointed, stating that the overall political purpose for the 2027 elections remains unaltered.
“I urge each and everyone of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” she added.
She also thanked supporters of the #AishaForSenate movement, calling their involvement and devotion encouraging throughout her brief campaign.
Looking ahead, the activist stated that she will continue her outreach throughout the FCT, promising to visit all six local councils in the coming days to thank residents and continue her push for reforms in the capital.
“In the coming week I will be returning back to all the 6 Area Councils God willing to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT,” she said.
Yesufu had only recently announced her intention to run for the FCT senatorial seat on May 6, shortly after joining the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), expressing a desire to contribute more directly to political leadership.
Her departure comes amid rising speculation in political circles that the party may have already unified its FCT Senate structure around another candidate, though the NDC has yet to issue an official statement on the subject.
