IShowSpeed, a popular American YouTuber and streamer, is likely to get a Ghanaian passport following his recent visit to the nation as part of his well-publicized Africa tour.

Darren Watkins Jr., a 21-year-old content maker, visited Ghana as one of the final stops on his live-streamed tour of 20 African countries.

The trip, billed “Speed Does Africa,” officially ended on Tuesday. Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stated that the YouTube star’s application for a Ghanaian passport had been approved, characterising him as a good ambassador for Ghana and Africa.

The decision was apparently made when IShowSpeed stated during a live webcast that his mother is Ghanaian. The minister also encouraged the influencer to continue promoting Ghana and Africa favourably on a global scale, stating that the country values his contributions to rewriting narratives about the continent.

IShowSpeed, who has over 50 million YouTube subscribers, received great accolades on his Africa tour for promoting African cultures, lifestyles, and towns while defying long-held stereotypes about the continent.

However, the announcement has elicited conflicting emotions from Ghanaians. While many celebrated the decision and the government’s recognition of the influencer’s impact, others condemned it, claiming that issuing passports to foreign celebrities could reduce the value of Ghanaian citizenship.
