A Nigerian woman who spoke out against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and cautioned citizens before the 2027 presidential election has provoked discussions on social media.
She reminded Nigerians that the day Tinubu took office in 2023, she announced the elimination of gasoline subsidies, which she says had an impact on the nation’s economy, in a widely circulated TikTok video.
“The very first day Tinubu became president, the day he was inaugurated, he removed fuel subsidy. That was his first decision,” she said.
She clarified that a fuel subsidy allowed Nigerians to purchase it at a lower cost because the government was paying a portion of the price.
Fuel prices skyrocketed from around 180 per litre to over 1,000 once it was withdrawn, which led to an increase in the cost of products and transportation.
The woman also discussed how the value of the naira fell from roughly 400 to more than 1,400 dollars. According to her, this increased the cost of living and complicated business.
She questioned whether the policy’s justifications—infrastructure, security, healthcare, and education—saw any discernible gains as a result of the reduction of subsidies.
“They said the money will fix roads, improve hospitals, improve security. But people are still struggling. Bandit attacks are still happening. Things are not stable,” she added.
She cautioned Nigerians to exercise caution when casting their ballots in 2027.
Online Nigerians were immediately divided by her statement.
While some supported her, others defended the administration, arguing that the elimination of subsidies was an essential economic reform and that results might not be seen right away.
