“If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning” — Peter Obi debunks Anambra debt claims

Claims that his administration left behind inherited obligations, like as a ₦2 billion ecological loan, contractor liabilities, and unpaid salaries, gratuities, and pensions, have been denied by former Anambra State Governor and presidential contender Peter Obi.

In a statement responding to the accusations made against the current Anambra State Government, Obi labelled them “completely false” and said that the state government was spreading “phantom debts and ecological loan fallacy.”

He claims that although his administration inherited a number of unfulfilled promises, it methodically paid off past gratuities and arrears that had accumulated during prior years.

Additionally, at the time of his resignation, Obi denied owing contractors for work that had been properly completed and certified.

He insisted that the state had no unpaid salaries, gratuities, or pensions at the time of his handover, claiming that over ₦35 billion was spent to settle the outstanding gratuities and arrears.

Regarding the contentious ₦2 billion ecological fund, Obi clarified that the funds were disbursed to alleviate the erosion crisis in Oko and Umuchiana around three months prior to the end of his term.

He claimed that because government is a continuum and the money had been designated for a particular project, he resisted temptation to spend it before leaving office, saying that it should be saved for his successor.

“The money was therefore left 100 per cent intact in First Bank, in Account No. 2018779464, with a balance of over ₦2.13 billion.”

About three months before his term ended, Obi stated that the controversial ₦2 billion ecological fund was distributed to address the erosion crisis in Oko and Umuchiana.

He resisted the urge to spend the money before leaving office, arguing that it should be saved for his successor because government is a continuum and the funds had been allocated for a specific project.
