“I stopped talking to a lady because of ₦50” — Man reveals

Insisting that “every naira matters” in his current financial situation, a Nigerian student has sparked controversy online after disclosing that he left a promising romance for ₦50.

On X, now known as Twitter, the young man talked about how a casual shawarma date revealed what he called a serious red flag.

He claimed in his post that he and the woman had left campus to purchase shawarma.

He gave ₦3,000 to the merchant, who charged ₦2,950, and got ₦50 in change.

He claimed that when they left, the woman casually took the ₦50 from his hand while he was carrying both the shawarma and the change.

“She said, ‘You’re the man now.’ I laughed. Thought she was joking. She wasn’t,” he wrote.

What at first seemed light-hearted eventually became serious. She brought up the matter again that same evening, he clarified.

Later that evening she actually said, ‘Next time you should just budget properly so you’re not collecting change.’”

The student expressed his displeasure with the comment. The problem for him extended beyond the actual ₦50.

Collecting change?? Madam, I am a student. ₦50 today is pure water tomorrow. It’s part of the financial strategy,” he stated.

He claimed that the remark caused him to reconsider if their ideals aligned. He believed that dismissing ₦50 indicated a more serious financial management mistake.

From that moment I just started seeing red flags everywhere. If ₦50 is nothing to you, what about ₦500? ₦5k? My future salary?” he added.

Rather than confront her, he chose a quieter route. “I didn’t argue. I just slowly reduced communication. Exams suddenly became very important.”

Since then, users’ responses to the message have been conflicting. Some defended the student by saying that, particularly in Nigeria’s challenging economy, financial discipline is crucial.

Others thought he overreacted, arguing that discussion could have cleared up the mistake and that the woman might have just been teasing.
