“I don’t know who sent me to release a film with Funke” – AY Makun recounts awkward film promotion experience

Popular comedian and filmmaker AY Makun has shared an awkward experience he had while promoting his movie, ‘The Waiter’, together with actress Funke Akindele.

Recounting the incident, AY said he ran into Funke at Cool FM, where the presenter proposed interviewing them jointly. He agreed, thinking they could both promote their films at once.

Things, however, took an unexpected turn when the presenter introduced them and asked listeners to call in and pick who they wanted to speak with.

According to AY, the first 17 callers all chose Funke. The presenter eventually reminded listeners that AY was also in the studio, yet another caller still asked to speak with Funke and questioned AY on when he would buy a ticket for Everybody Loves Jenifa.

AY said he felt embarrassed until the presenter announced they would take one last call. This time, the caller, who said he was from Ikorodu, asked to speak with AY.

The caller commended his contributions to the movie industry, his Guinness World Records feat, his role in ‘A Trip to Jamaica’, and his support for the comedy industry.

“Please, you’re an icon. Don’t let anyone intimidate you,” the caller encouraged him.

AY said the caller’s words meant a lot to him, noting that he walked out of the studio with his head held high. Once he got into his car, his personal assistant asked if he was finally happy.
