“I didn’t find Jesus in a church. I found him in the Quran” – Ex-Muslim

A man identified as Shahriq Khan has shared how studying a Quranic verse prompted him to question his former faith and eventually embrace Christianity.

In a post circulating online, Khan recounted how Surah 5:32 was once his favourite Quranic passage because of its message about the value of human life.

According to him, he frequently quoted the verse during discussions about Islam and peace because he considered its message powerful. However, his perspective changed after he examined its historical context and discovered similarities with an ancient Jewish teaching.

Ex-Muslim Explains Why Surah 5:32 Was His Favourite Verse

Khan explained that he often cited Surah 5:32 during religious debates because it teaches that taking one human life is comparable to k!lling all of humanity, while saving one life is comparable to saving all of humanity.

However, he said he became curious after noticing that the passage refers to a decree given to the Children of Israel rather than presenting the statement as an entirely new revelation to Prophet Muhammad.

This observation prompted him to investigate the historical origins of the teaching and explore whether similar ideas existed in earlier religious traditions.

Khan Discovers Similarities With an Ancient Jewish Teaching

According to Khan, his research led him to Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5, a Jewish text containing a teaching about the creation of humanity and the story of Cain and Abel.

The passage emphasises the value of human life by explaining that destroying a single life is comparable to destroying an entire world.

Khan said the similarities between the Jewish teaching and the Quranic passage raised questions for him about the origins of Surah 5:32 and its relationship with earlier religious traditions.

He argued that the passage might have incorporated an existing rabbinic teaching or that the tradition could have reached Arabia through Jewish teachers.

However, similarities between religious texts alone do not establish the precise historical route through which a particular teaching developed or was transmitted.

Discovery Prompts Questions About the Quran

Reflecting on the experience, Khan said his attention shifted from appreciating the verse’s message to examining its historical background.

He explained that the discovery challenged his previous understanding of the Quran and influenced his views about its claim to divine revelation.

For Khan, the experience became part of a broader spiritual journey that eventually led him to Christianity.

‘I Found the Living Word’

Concluding his testimony, Khan described his decision to embrace Christianity as a defining moment in his life, expressing his faith in Jesus Christ.

He declared:> “I found the Living Word. PRAISE MY KING JESUS CHRIST, I’M FREE!”

His testimony has drawn attention online, with the discussion touching on the historical relationship between religious texts, the interpretation of sacred scriptures and the personal experiences that shape people’s faith.
