In the midst of worsening fuel shortages linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump has harshly criticized the United Kingdom for refusing to support possible military action against Iran, telling Britain to “get your own oil.”
The comments follow UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s reiteration that the country would not participate in any ground invasion of Iran. “All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom… I have a suggestion for you,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
“Number 1, buy from the U.S. we have plenty. Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT. You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us.” He added: “Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done.”
The comments mark the latest escalation in tensions between Washington and London over the conflict, with Trump also reportedly saying Starmer is no “Winston Churchill” and criticising the UK’s stance throughout the crisis.
Britain is currently facing mounting pressure over energy supplies, with reports indicating its last major jet fuel shipment from the Middle East is due within days. Disruptions to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have driven up fuel prices and raised concerns about shortages.
Starmer is expected to chair an emergency COBRA meeting to assess the economic impact, including contingency plans for diesel, jet fuel, and fertiliser supplies, as well as the broader cost-of-living pressures.
Despite the war of words, diplomatic ties remain intact, with plans for a UK state visit to the United States still expected to go ahead.
Trump also criticised other allies, including France, over restrictions on military logistics, while reports suggest the U.S. is weighing options to end the conflict without reopening the Strait of Hormuz, focusing instead on military pressure and diplomatic efforts.
