Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai arrives court as corruption trial continues

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, appeared before the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Monday as proceedings continued in his ongoing corruption trial.

El-Rufai arrived at the court around 9:30 a.m. under the escort of officials from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, alongside operatives of the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force.

The former governor is facing charges related to alleged abuse of office, fraud, and financial misconduct during his administration from 2015 to 2023.

According to the ICPC, funds were allegedly disbursed for projects that were either not carried out or were improperly managed. The anti-corruption agency is seeking to establish that public resources were misused during El-Rufai’s tenure.

El-Rufai has repeatedly denied the allegations, maintaining that he is innocent of all charges.

At Monday’s hearing, the court was expected to continue hearing arguments and applications from both the prosecution and defence teams as the case progresses.

It will be recalled that on April 14, 2026, Justice Rilwan Aikawa granted El-Rufai bail in the sum of ₦200 million. The bail conditions required two sureties, including a serving or retired civil servant not below Grade Level 15 and a recognised traditional ruler.

Although his legal team later sought a review of the bail terms, a Kaduna State High Court presided over by Justice Darius Khobo reportedly rejected subsequent bail applications, citing concerns that the former governor’s influence could affect ongoing investigations into the corruption allegations.
