Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate, will officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 national elections.

A senior party official revealed in Abuja that Obi has purportedly decided to defect and will make his announcement during a rally on December 31 in Enugu, the South-East’s political capital.

According to the source, Obi’s followers and loyalists have already begun preparations for the anticipated proclamation.

The person also revealed that about three weeks ago, after the ADC requested Obi to decide whether to join the coalition, the former Anambra State governor met with the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, to reconfirm his loyalty.

It was speculated that the party’s attitude and internal arrangements may have persuaded Obi to eventually take the action.

Earlier, on December 7, the ADC officially responded to a statement attributed to Obi in which he described the party as unstable, encouraging him to make a clear decision on whether or not to join the coalition.

Speaking with Punch, read what the party source said below;

“We are aware that Peter Obi is making plans to declare for the ADC on December 31 in Enugu. Although he has yet to formally inform the party, the plans are genuine.”

When asked why Obi chose Enugu instead of Anambra State for his declaration, the official indicated that the decision was strategic.

“Enugu is the political capital of the South-East. Obi is representing the region, not just his state. That must have informed his decision.”

If true, Peter Obi’s defection to the ADC might drastically alter political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in the South-East and among his devoted supporters.
