Nigerian cleric Pastor Sarah Omakwu has sparked debate after insisting that divorce remains wrong, even when a marriage involves physical, emotional or verbal abu$e.
Speaking during a recent sermon, she maintained that $3xual immorality is the only biblical ground for divorce, arguing that anyone unwilling to remain married for life should reconsider getting married.
“Even if Adeboye, Oyedepo, Kumuyi, Okonkwo, these fathers in the faith, if any of them divorce, it’s still wrong. No matter what the reason, it’s wrong based on the Word of God.
If you are not intending or planning to stay in marriage for life, it is better not to enter. Because the only reason you can separate from a man or woman is if there’s $3xual immorality. Outside of that, there are no grounds for divorce,” she stated.
Addressing a question about abus!ve marriages, Pastor Sarah acknowledged that battery and abuse are serious sins but maintained that they do not constitute biblical grounds for divorce.
She advised victims to leave abu$ive environments while their partners receive counselling and work towards changing their behaviour. According to her, victims should only consider returning if there is genuine and demonstrable improvement.
“Once there is battery, the person is taken out. You take them out and leave until it is fixed. And if it takes ten years to fix that person, good. If it is not fixed, don’t go back.
You counsel him, and counsel him, and insist until you see behavioural change. The spirit of Jesus is not to throw people away, but to fix them,” she added.
Her comments have reignited conversations about marriage, divorce and domestic abu$e, particularly regarding the role of religious teachings in guiding people experiencing vi0lence in their marriages.
