Okih Bukola, a Nigerian woman, recounted a funny anecdote of how she shaved her pubic hair for the first time while she was a university student.
Bukola highlighted the difficulties and strains of peer pressure by sharing a relevant story on Facebook.
Bukola claims that when she first started college, she saw that every girl living in the residence hall had a shaving tool.
“Not one. Not two. EVERYBODY,” she wrote. “The only human being I knew that used a shaving stick was my father, and as far as I was concerned, men used it to shave their beards. So I was confused.”
She was initially perplexed because she had only seen males use such sticks for facial hair.
“I told myself, ‘Bukky, face your book. This is not your ministry,’” she said, deciding to ignore it at first.
A few months later, she was confronted by a housemate one evening while getting dressed.
“BUKKYYY!! You wan plait this evil forest??” the roommate reportedly shouted, pointing directly at her private area. She added, “So you no dey shave?? Abi your guy like make something dey hold him like Velcro??”
Bukola acknowledged that she was taken aback, but the experience helped her understand the shaving stick’s function.
The following morning, determined to blend in, she purchased her own shaving stick.
According to Bukola, she isolated herself in the bathroom and tried to shave after anxiously examining herself in the mirror.
“I looked at myself in the mirror!” she said. “Today is my freedom day.”
But the itching began five minutes after I left the loo. It had gotten so bad by the time she went to lectures that she had to covertly press and scratch while feigning to take notes.
Describing the ordeal, she said: “As I was going for lecture, I was scratching on the road like person wey dey pursue invisible goat. In the lecture hall… I crossed my legs. People thought I was forming posh. Na lie. I was using one leg to press Angelina so she can behave.”
Bukola addressed her flatmate about the pain when she got back to the hostel.
According to her flatmate, the itching was brought on by Bukola shaving in the opposite direction of her hair growth.
