On Christmas Day, the Benue State Police Command successfully stopped an abduction attempt and freed a man named Geoffrey Akume without having to pay a ransom.

The incident happened early in the morning along Gboko/Makurdi Road at Tiortu, said to DSP Udeme Edet, the command’s public relations officer.

The victim was allegedly stopped by armed individuals who were thought to be kidnappers while he was going from Gboko to Makurdi.

“Upon receipt of the distress information, operatives of the Benue State Police Command swiftly swung into action and commenced intensive patrols and a coordinated search of the area,” Edet said.

As the abductors tried to relocate the victim into a neighbouring woodland, the police squad found him.

“On sighting the police team and hearing the sirens, the perpetrators abandoned the victim and fled into the forest,” she added.

After being transported to the Abinse Police Station and given a debriefing by Mr. Ifeanyi Emenari, the Commissioner of Police, the rescued guy was reunited with his family.

Emenari praised the police’ professionalism and quick reaction.

“Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects,” he said. He also reassured residents that patrols, stop-and-search operations, and intelligence-led policing have been intensified across strategic locations in the state.

“Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through approved emergency channels,” Edet added.

The operation demonstrates the command’s dedication to protecting lives, especially during the holiday season.
