Atiku Moves to Supreme Court Over Appeal Court Ruling, Speaks on ADC Ticket

According to a report by Vanguard on Monday 13 July 2026, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has announced plans to challenge the recent Court of Appeal judgment on the party’s congresses at the Supreme Court, insisting that the verdict has no impact on his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement released on Monday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said his legal team had been directed to seek a final interpretation of the appellate court’s decision from the nation’s highest court.

He urged ADC members, supporters, and Nigerians backing the party’s campaign to remain calm, stressing that reports suggesting the court nullified the party’s primary elections were incorrect.

According to Atiku, the Appeal Court ruling dealt only with issues relating to the conduct of the ADC’s state congresses and the tenure of state executive committees; He maintained that the judgment did not invalidate the primary elections through which the party nominated its candidates for the 2027 general election.

The former vice president explained that the election of party executives and the nomination of candidates are two separate legal processes governed by different provisions of the law, adding that one should not be mistaken for the other.

He further argued that courts only determine matters presented before them, warning against attempts to expand the scope of the judgment beyond the issues decided by the court.

Atiku also criticized what he described as misleading interpretations of the ruling, insisting that political commentary and social media speculation cannot replace the court’s actual decision.

Expressing confidence in the judicial process, he said the Supreme Court would provide a final resolution on the matter; He reassured party supporters that the ADC’s 2027 presidential campaign remains firmly on course and urged them to stay focused on the party’s objective of providing an alternative leadership for Nigeria.
