Media personality Chioma Amaryllis Ahaghotu has sparked debate after arguing that, according to traditional beliefs, every child born to a married woman belongs to her husband regardless of biological paternity.

In a Facebook post, Ahaghotu addressed men who support polygamy on the grounds that their ancestors practiced it while simultaneously advocating for DNA testing to confirm a child’s biological father.

She contended that this position is inconsistent, noting that many traditional societies also held the belief that the payment of a bride price meant that all children born to a woman within her husband’s household were regarded as his.

According to her, those who frequently invoke ancestral customs to justify polygamy should also be willing to accept traditional views on paternity when discussing the issue of DNA testing.

Ahaghotu further suggested that it is contradictory for individuals to embrace the argument that “men are polygamous by nature” based on cultural traditions while rejecting other aspects of the same traditions concerning the parentage of children.

Her comments have generated mixed reactions online, with some users agreeing that cultural practices should be applied consistently, while others argued that modern scientific tools such as DNA testing provide certainty that was unavailable to previous generations.
