Alonso ready for Liverpool job if Slot is axed – report

If Liverpool decides to fire current manager Arne Slot at the end of the current campaign, Xabi Alonso is reportedly ready to take over.

For the time being, Slot is still in charge, but a lacklustre defence of the Premier League title has put his job under more scrutiny, and internal talks have already hinted at a potential managerial change this summer.

Liverpool is considering a structural change.
Expectations were high after winning the league in 2025, but this season’s results have drastically declined.

Concerns at the executive level have been raised by Liverpool’s inability to provide consistency despite significant expenditure, notably the signing of Florian Wirtz.

According to reports, Alonso has been recognised as a strategic fit to spearhead a squad rebuild by Michael Edwards’ sporting leadership.

The possible change is also consistent with Mohamed Salah’s anticipated departure, which may lead to a more significant personnel and tactical change.

Alonso establishes requirements
Although Alonso has laid out specific requirements about control over recruitment and squad planning, it is believed that he is amenable to discussions.

This position is a reflection of the lessons learned from his previous stint at Real Madrid, where his term was allegedly affected by his lack of authority.

Alonso’s camp, lead by agent Inaki Ibanez, has confirmed interest from several teams, but Liverpool is still a top choice because of Alonso’s familiarity with the club’s structure and historical ties.

Focusing on strategic timing
With few games left, Liverpool is now trailing Aston Villa in their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Alonso would prefer a smooth transition period before the next season, thus it is not anticipated that he will take over in the middle of the season.
