“Your husband’s money is not your money” – Lady shares marriage lesson, advises women to keep working

A Nigerian woman has shared a hard lesson from her marriage, urging women not to give up their careers or businesses simply because their husbands are financially comfortable.

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), she explained that a husband’s wealth does not automatically translate to financial independence for his wife, emphasising the need for personal income and savings.

To drive home her point, she noted that a woman could lose her marriage and return to her father’s house with nothing but her belongings, despite having lived a luxurious lifestyle during the marriage.

Read what she said below:

“Marriage made me to understand that your husband’s money is not your money. Let’s stop deceiving ourselves. Let me give you an instance.

If you marry a very wealthy man today, aside from all the money that he’s giving you, all the gifts he’s giving you and everything, if anything happens to your marriage today, you’re going back to your father’s house with just your bag. That mansion na him own. That car na him own.”

She questioned why some women give up work or shut down their businesses after marriage, stressing that marrying a wealthy man does not automatically secure a woman financially.

She encouraged women to keep advancing their careers, growing their businesses, and setting money aside, no matter how financially stable their husbands may be.

“So don’t be deceived, though oo. As you are in that marriage, work and save. If not, you end up like me,” she added.

Her advice has sparked conversations about financial independence in marriage and the importance of women maintaining their own sources of income and savings.
