Young man sentenced to two years in prison for alleged phone theft

A video of a young man, identified as Ayuba, being interrogated and sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly stealing a mobile phone has sparked widespread online debate.

In the video, which lasts about one minute and 27 seconds, Ayuba is seen sitting on the floor, visibly distressed, while answering questions from an interrogator.

Court sentence triggers public backlash online

Speaking in broken English, he introduces himself and mentions associates Lashif, Azim, and Mohammed, who he claims work nearby doing cleaning and manual labor.

When questioned about the alleged theft, Ayuba appeared perplexed and repeatedly claimed he did not carry a bag.

He was informed moments later that he was going to jail. In disbelief, he asked, “Why jail?” before confirming his two-year sentence..

Despite the shock, Ayuba repeatedly thanked God, saying, “Thank God, thank God,” while explaining that after serving his sentence, he hoped to return to his mother’s side.

Social media users question justice and punishment

The video quickly triggered strong reactions on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the severity of the punishment.

Some users expressed sympathy, arguing that imprisonment was excessive for a minor offence and suggesting community service or rehabilitation instead.

Others used the case to highlight perceived inequality in the justice system. One commenter wrote that poor offenders are often publicly punished, while wealthy individuals accused of larger crimes rarely face similar consequences.

While opinions remain divided, the case has reignited conversations around justice, proportional punishment and the treatment of young offenders in Nigeria’s legal system.
