During a disrupted online session, a student allegedly informed the professor, “You don’t know how to teach,” to which the lecturer calmly responded. This response went viral.
The event took place during a virtual lecture that was impacted by technological issues, underscoring persistent worries about internet dependability in Nigeria’s educational system.
Online reactions to the lecturer’s post-session response have been conflicting; while some have praised his poise, others have highlighted the difficulties students encounter when learning online.
Addressing the situation, the lecturer said: “The network was not very friendly during our class today. This made someone say, ‘the man does not even know how to do online class’. I want you to understand that we don’t have much power over network services in Nigeria. The only thing one can do is to probably change the network, location or browser. In my own case, I have already set up in the office and it’s not convenient moving around.”
He further appealed to students to remain patient despite the disruptions. “So, please don’t be annoyed. I know it can be very frustrating when you are eager to learn but the coast is not clear. I respect and value you all. God bless you,” he added.
Since many Nigerian universities implemented virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, the issue has been the subject of repeated complaints, revealing ongoing infrastructure deficiencies.
