Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has criticised Peter Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, arguing that voters should distinguish personal admiration from an objective assessment of a politician’s performance in office.

According to a Vanguard News report published on Monday, August 24, 2026, Amaechi made the remarks during a political session at the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The conference, themed “Beyond Limits,” brought together legal practitioners, presidential candidates and political representatives to discuss governance, public policies and Nigeria’s political future ahead of the 2027 general election.

Amaechi argued that politicians who have previously held public office should be judged based on their achievements, decisions and the impact of their administrations.

“You can like Peter Obi as a person, but the truth is that he did not perform as governor,” Amaechi said, while questioning Obi’s record in the education and health sectors.

The former Rivers governor alleged that Obi did not provide adequate subsidies for education during his tenure, claiming that lecturers and doctors in Anambra State were on strike for 13 months.

He maintained that political support should not be based solely on a candidate’s personality or public image, particularly when the individual has previously had the opportunity to govern.

Amaechi also criticised other former public officials, arguing that politicians who failed to deliver meaningful results should apologise to Nigerians rather than return to seek votes with new promises ahead of elections.
