Nigerian preacher Apostle Michael Orokpo has cautioned Christians against rushing into divorce and subsequent remarriage when faced with challenges in their marriages.
The cleric shared his position in a viral video while addressing marital crises, divorce and the responsibilities of couples in maintaining their relationships.
Orokpo argued that disagreements and conflicts should not automatically become reasons for couples to end their marriages, urging those experiencing difficulties to seek guidance rather than rely on opinions circulating on social media.
Speaking about situations involving physical altercations between partners, he questioned the idea of simply walking away from a marriage without seeking appropriate intervention.
In his words:
“Forget this garbage on Facebook. I tell you, he slaps you or she slaps you, walk away. Walk away to where? There’s no divorce because there is crisis in marriage.”
He, however, acknowledged that some circumstances might require couples to separate, explaining that such decisions should be guided by the appropriate spiritual authority.
According to him, even when separation becomes necessary, remarriage is not permitted under his interpretation of biblical teachings.
He further referenced Jesus Christ’s teaching on divorce and adultery, stating:
“Jesus said if it is not for the cause of fornication, he said you are guilty of adultery. The person that marries you is also guilty of adultery.”
Advice to Married and Unmarried Christians
The preacher also advised unmarried Christians to follow biblical principles when choosing and preparing for marriage.
He urged married couples to prioritise personal character, prayer and the teachings of the Bible as they work towards building stable relationships.
“For those of you who are not yet married, better do it the Bible way. And for those of you who are already married, invest enough character, enough prayer and enough Scripture, Word of God for that marriage to work,” he said.
Orokpo further encouraged couples experiencing marital difficulties to seek counsel from church leaders and spiritual authorities rather than making major decisions based solely on social media advice.
His comments have drawn attention to ongoing discussions among Christians about biblical teachings on divorce, separation, remarriage and how couples should respond to marital challenges.
