Wife takes back doctor husband who intentionally drove her, their two children off cliff after charges are dropped

An Indian doctor accused of intentionally driving his family off a cliff in California has had the attempted m•√der charges against him dismissed after successfully participating in a mental health diversion program.

Dharmesh Patel, 45, a radiologist from Pasadena, was charged with three counts of attempted m•√der after authorities alleged he deliberately drove his Tesla off Devil’s Slide in Pacifica, San Mateo County, in January 2023.

On Monday, July 6, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Sharon K. Cho dismissed the charges after receiving reports from Patel’s treating clinicians indicating that he had responded well to treatment and was making significant progress in the court-approved mental health diversion program.

According to the judge, the medical reports showed Patel was “doing very well” and intended to continue receiving treatment.

Following the ruling, Patel embraced his wife in the courtroom before the family left the courthouse together.

With the charges dismissed, Patel will not face further prosecution in the case and is expected to have his passport returned after it was previously confiscated by authorities.

Patel’s wife, then 41, and the couple’s two young children—a 7-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son—survived after the Tesla plunged approximately 300 feet down the cliff.

The case drew widespread attention because all four occupants survived the crash despite the severity of the incident.
