Wendy Achumba, a student at the College of Nursing in Obowo, purportedly confessed in a viral video that prompted extensive online outrage.
Following enquiries into the event, the culprit, Onyema Okonkwo, was reportedly nabbed by youths from Umuadara, Umulogho, in Imo State’s Obowo Local Government Area.
According to neighbourhood sources, the arrest occurred as a result of escalating mistrust and anxiety in the area.
The operation was apparently headed by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa, who coordinated operations that resulted in the suspect’s arrest.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the suspect allegedly described how the crime occurred, alleging that he went to the victim’s house with another person named Emmanuel.
He said: “Around 7pm, me and my friend Emmanuel, who is a phone charger, arrived at her lodge. We noticed nobody was around, We went straight ot her room and asked her for sex, but she refused. When we started forcing her, she injured my face with her nails. We later overpowered her, and raped her. I have sex with her twice while my frind make three times with her, I later attacked her with a wooden object while my friend also stabbed her with a knife…”
The video has sparked fury online, with many Nigerians calling for justice for the slain student.
A community source also disclosed that the late student was living alone at the time of the tragedy because her roommates were away for their nursing program experience.
The source explained: “She was the only one in the house. The owner of the house is based in America. There were three students occupying the house. But two went for their nursing experience, leaving only her in the compound.”
