‘We Talked with Victor’ – Eric Chelle Explains Osimhen’s Reaction After Substitution

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has commented on Victor Osimhen’s apparent frustration following his substitution in Nigeria’s 2–1 win over Tanzania during their first match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as reported by All Nigeria Soccer.

Osimhen, who started the Group C match, played a significant role in Nigeria’s offence before being substituted for Paul Onuachu in the 86th minute. His visible annoyance as he left the field raised questions during Chelle’s post-match press conference.

Chelle addressed the issue, stating that it had already been resolved internally. “We discussed it with Victor, and it will remain between us,” he said. “For more details, you’ll need to ask him to speak to me.”

Throughout the match, Osimhen was active, using his speed and movement to challenge the Tanzanian defence. He nearly scored multiple times, missing with a powerful shot and prompting last-minute clearances from defenders. He had one goal disallowed for offside and another attempt that was cleared off the line, demonstrating his crucial role in Nigeria’s attack even if he didn’t score.

Nigeria claimed all three points thanks to goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman, marking a successful start to their AFCON 2025 campaign.

Looking ahead, the focus now shifts to Nigeria’s next Group C match against Tunisia as the three-time African champions aim to build on their opening success.
