US couple divorces after 57 years to protect wife from $277,000 medical debt

An American couple apparently dissolved their 57-year marriage to spare the wife from her husband’s large medical bills.

The couple’s niece tweeted the poignant story on X (previously Twitter) as @luvhuss, eliciting considerable criticism of the United States’ healthcare system.

The niece claims that despite their official separation, her uncle and aunty are still profoundly in love.

The choice to divorce was regarded as a painful but essential measure taken to protect the wife from financial hardship caused by her husband’s ill condition.

The divorce was apparently caused by the husband’s growing medical expenditures, which had reached $277,000.

By terminating the marriage, the wife is no longer legally responsible for the debt if her husband dies.

The arrangement also ensured that the family home remained completely in the wife’s name, preventing it from being impacted by medical bills or debt recovery.

The niece expressed regret at the termination of a marriage that lasted more than 50 years, emphasising the emotional sacrifice made for financial security.

Sharing the story on X, read what @luvhuss wrote below:

“My aunt and uncle got divorced today. They are no longer married after 57 years. They’re still in love but divorce was necessary because of uncle’s medical bills. Now, when uncle passes, aunt won’t be saddled with $277,000 in debt. She’s free & the house is in her name. I’m so sad that decades of marriage comes to an end because of the American healthcare system.”

Netizens expressed sadness that a marriage of nearly six decades had to end in this manner, while others criticised the system for putting the couple in such a difficult situation.
