Media personality Tomike has sparked a conversation about how domestic workers are treated, particularly the practice of making children’s nannies wear their work uniforms when accompanying families to restaurants and social gatherings.

In a video shared online, Tomike questioned why some parents insist that their nannies remain in their uniforms whenever they go out with the children, describing the practice as unnecessary and potentially embarrassing.

She said she finds it difficult to understand why the practice appears to be relatively common in Nigeria compared with what she has observed in other countries.

“I personally find it very hum!liating. It’s giving, ‘I’m the nanny and I am the nanny,’” she said.

Tomike says nannies should be treated with dignity

Tomike explained that she prefers her nannies to wear clean and presentable clothes when accompanying her children outside the home.

According to her, the way a nanny is dressed can also reflect on the family she works for, which is why she would rather have her caregivers look neat and comfortable when attending outings with her children.

She acknowledged that there should be a clear distinction between an employer and domestic staff, stressing that treating a nanny respectfully does not mean eliminating professional boundaries.

However, she disagreed with the idea that domestic workers must constantly be reminded of their status within a household.

Tomike said she would rather create an environment where the people responsible for caring for her children feel appreciated and respected.

She explained that once someone takes on the responsibility of caring for her children, she begins to regard that person as part of the family and believes they should be treated with dignity.

Her comments have sparked discussion online about the treatment of domestic workers, employer-employee boundaries, dignity in the workplace and the expectations placed on nannies when accompanying families to public events.
