Dele Farotimi, a human rights attorney and social critic, has denounced as a violation of national sovereignty the reported US military airstrikes on ISIS-affiliated targets in Nigeria.
He claimed that deeper leadership shortcomings and the incapacity of Nigerian authorities to independently defend the nation’s territorial integrity are reflected in the alleged action.
In response to claims of US cooperation in counterterrorism operations in north-west Nigeria, Farotimi made the comments in a post on his X handle.
He maintained that political leaders who lack the determination to protect the country without outside interference have consistently undermined Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The attorney claimed that foreign military operations inside Nigeria’s borders expose the country’s long-standing governance issues and feeble claim to independence in terms of security.
Farotimi recalled an episode involving France and the adjacent Benin Republic based on regional circumstances.
“Macron sent a now-disgraced Nigeria to bomb coupists in sovereign Benin,” Farotimi wrote.
He said that Nigeria’s sovereignty was under foreign control and that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu operated without the consent of the legislature.
Farotimi went on to say that President Donald Trump’s alleged US airstrikes exhibited a similar pattern of exterior indifference.
“(Trump) peeing over Nigeria’s sovereignty,” he said, accusing Nigeria’s political elite of enabling such actions through silence and complicity
He continued by saying that because Nigeria’s leadership has not clearly asserted national independence in security matters or demanded accountability, foreign powers act brazenly.
