Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte had successful surgery after suffering a knee ligament injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Uruguay international sustained the injury during his country’s defeat to Spain at the end of June and was stretchered off the pitch before being transported for further examination.

United stated that the operation was successful, and Ugarte is already commencing his rehabilitation program under the guidance of the club’s medical and performance experts.

The club did not give a timetable for the midfielder’s comeback, but the injury is expected to keep him out for a prolonged period.

Due to the setback, Ugarte will miss the first half of the next season as he recovers.

Ugarte’s injury has exacerbated Manchester United’s midfield issues following Casemiro’s departure earlier this summer.

The Premier League team has already strengthened its squad, adding Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Belgian international Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

Despite these additions, United are still expected to sign another midfielder before the summer transfer window shuts.
