Donald Trump has sparked fresh international debate after reposting a social media image on Truth Social showing the Strait of Hormuz renamed as the “Strait of Trump.”
The image, shared on Wednesday, April 29, prominently displayed the altered name across the strategic waterway, a move many observers interpreted as a provocative gesture amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The region has become a major flashpoint in the ongoing standoff between Washington and Tehran, especially as the United States Navy continues intercepting vessels suspected of transporting Iranian crude oil.
Although there has been no official move to formally rename the waterway, analysts noted that any unilateral attempt to change the name of an international maritime route would be largely symbolic and would carry no legal standing under international diplomatic conventions.
Despite this, global oil markets reportedly reacted to the development, with prices rising as traders weighed the possibility of further escalation in the region and growing uncertainty surrounding nuclear negotiations and maritime security.
