Tinubu removes Egbetokun as IG of police, appoints Tunji Disu as successor

In a significant upheaval of the country’s security leadership, President Bola Tinubu dismissed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Egbetokun was requested to resign during a meeting with the President on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to sources inside the Presidency.

“Yes. Egbetokun is gone,” one presidential aide told journalists, adding that a formal announcement was being prepared and would be released soon.

Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu is anticipated to succeed Egbetokun as the new IGP, according to senior government and police sources.

Disu, who is widely regarded as the president’s candidate for the top police position, is currently an AIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos. President Tinubu first named

Egbetokun as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, but he was ordered to step down following a period of heavy public scrutiny.

At the time this report was filed, calls for comment on the development were not returned to Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga or Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin.
