Residents of an Abuja community are counting their losses after heavy rainfall triggered a flash flood that reportedly caused extensive damage to properties and vehicles.

Videos shared online show cars submerged in floodwater, machines and other belongings destroyed, while parts of some buildings reportedly collapsed as a result of the flooding.

After the floodwater receded, residents began assessing the extent of the destruction, with some describing the incident as one of the worst flooding experiences they had witnessed.

One man whose belongings were reportedly destroyed in the flood expressed gratitude for surviving the incident while lamenting the scale of the damage.

“The thing that happened here is not a small thing. Thank God I survived it. I dont know where I’ll begin,” he lamented.

He said he had never experienced such a situation before, describing how the floodwater carried vehicles away from where they had been parked.

“I’ve never experienced this. This is my first time. Like, water is moving cars from a particular spot and will shift it to wherever it likes.”

The man described the incident as a “calamity”, stressing that the sudden nature of the flooding left residents with little or no time to move their belongings to safety.

According to the accounts accompanying the videos, the flood occurred suddenly, preventing many residents from evacuating their vehicles, equipment and other valuables before the water rose.

As the water receded, the scale of the damage became more apparent, leaving affected residents to salvage what remained of their belongings and assess the losses caused by the flooding.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the impact of heavy rainfall and flash flooding in Abuja, particularly in areas where residents may have little warning before floodwaters rise.
