A popular Instagram Live video has generated internet discussion as two women presented opposing perspectives about submitting in relationships, defying traditional gender norms and sparking a debate about partnership and equality.
The first speaker claimed that the problem is not that women refuse to submit, but rather that submission is frequently misinterpreted and used unevenly in modern relationships.
“Women, I don’t believe we have a problem with submission. It’s the way you people understand submission…We are equal when it comes to expenses, but in decision-making, my brain shuts down as a woman. Only your brain works. That’s where the disparity is.”
She also stated that when a man emotionally supports his girlfriend and fulfils his tasks, the relationship runs smoothly.
The second speaker presented an opposing viewpoint. She emphasised that submission should be mutual and cautioned against one-sided demands.
“You can’t tell me that you are the head and do whatever you feel like doing, then come back and expect me to just listen. Submission is both ways…If you do what you want, then I’m a slave, not a wife or partner.”
The talk, which lasted little under two minutes, covered cooperation, independence, and respect in modern partnerships.
The video ends abruptly, but it has since spread widely on social media, raising discussions on traditional versus modern dynamics in romantic relationships.
The topic parallels broader concerns about gender roles in Nigeria and elsewhere, with social media users debating whether mutual respect and equality can coexist with traditional concepts of obedience.
