“Spend with sense” – Nigerian mother advises son against overspending on girlfriends

A Nigerian mother has stirred reactions online after giving her son, Harry, advice on how to handle money when dealing with romantic relationships.

In a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, the woman cautioned her son against spending excessively on women or allowing his generosity to leave him financially disadvantaged.

She encouraged Harry to be more deliberate with his spending, particularly when giving money or buying things for a girlfriend.

“Harry, please don’t give your money to girls. They will finish your money and leave you. I’m not saying you should not give them, but spend wisely.”

The mother further advised him to avoid spending beyond his financial capacity, stressing that being in a relationship should not automatically make him responsible for continuously meeting a girlfriend’s financial needs.

She also warned him to be cautious when women make emotional requests for money, food or other forms of financial assistance.

According to her, whatever Harry gives to a girl should not be entirely one-sided, suggesting that there should be some form of reciprocity in the relationship.

“If you have a girlfriend, spend with sense. Spend small small. Any girl you are giving money to, the girl should be able to give you something in return,” she added.

The mother ended her advice by urging her son to take her words seriously and remain financially disciplined rather than allowing romantic feelings or emotional appeals to influence his spending.

Her comments have since generated discussion online, with social media users sharing different views about her approach to teaching her son about relationships, generosity and financial boundaries.
