A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced a 28-year-old man to seven years in prison after he was found guilty of advertising cann@b!s for sale on social media.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Command announced the conviction in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Media and Advocacy Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari.

According to the agency, the convict, Ashiru Idris, was arrested on April 22, 2026, after a video of him openly advertising cann@b!s for sale circulated on social media.

Delivering judgment, Justice S. M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kano sentenced Idris to seven years imprisonment without the option of a fine. The sentence takes effect from July 14, 2026, the date of the judgment.

The NDLEA described the ruling as a landmark judgment and said it would serve as a strong warning to individuals who use public platforms to promote or engage in the illegal d√ug trade.

Commenting on the verdict, Kano State Commander, CN DY Lawal, said:

“This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure offenders are brought to justice.”

The command also expressed appreciation to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), for his continued support, which it said has strengthened the agency’s operations in Kano.

The agency further urged families, community leaders, social media platforms, and members of the public to support efforts aimed at combating substance abuse and encouraged anyone with useful information to report d√ug-related activities to the authorities.
