“Sir, this isn’t the story you told us” — Landlord fined ₦100k after reporting tenant to police

A woman told the tale of how a landlord paid ₦100,000 after a tenant’s broken padlock was reported to the police.

The account states that the incident started when a renter had to leave the compound before the regular gate-opening time in order to attend a job interview early in the morning.

Despite the tenant’s arguments that he was in a hurry for a crucial interview, the landlord maintained that the gate will stay shut until seven in the morning.

According to the woman, at around six in the morning, the tenant pleaded for permission to leave the compound but was turned down.

The tenant broke the padlock on the gate and fled the property when they realised they could miss the interview.

The landlord came back later that day with police, accusing the tenant of breaking the lock and requesting his arrest.

The officers reportedly asked neighbours about the event after they arrived at the compound.

Did the tenant sleep here last night?”

When residents responded that he did not, the officers sought to know who had broken the padlock.

Then who broke the padlock?”

According to the account, neighbours pointed to the landlord’s son, prompting the officers to question the landlord’s version of events.

Sir, this isn’t the story you told us.”

The woman added that the landlord paid ₦100,000 for squandering police time before the policemen departed.

Since then, the tale has sparked debates on social media about renters’ rights, landlords’ regulations, and how to resolve conflicts with law enforcement.
