“Single women are not missing anything in marriage” — Lady sparks debate online

A woman has sparked great outrage on social media after claiming that unmarried women should not be encouraged to marry, describing marriage as a “life of service and subservience.”

The statements, made in a now-viral video earlier this week, rekindled discussions about gender roles, financial independence, and societal expectations of women.

She urged young women to seek financial stability before considering marriage, warning that rushing into it could cause undue stress.

In the video, the woman stated that many women enter marriage without fully comprehending the emotional and domestic burdens that frequently accompany it.

She said, “If you’re a single woman, you’re not missing anything in marriage. Marriage is a life of service and subservient; you’re coming to work and baby another adult. You are coming to stress. Don’t rush into marriage, every woman knows this. That’s why we tell women to get their money first before marriage.”

Her comments sparked debate online, with some people agreeing that financial independence enables women to make better relationship decisions, while others attacked the assertion as a broad generalisation.

In a follow-up comment, the woman maintained her stance, adding, “Many women won’t say it publicly, but they know marriage can be overwhelming if you are not financially and emotionally prepared. Being single gives you freedom to grow and understand yourself first.”

The film has continued to circulate across platforms, generating thousands of comments and changing existing discussions on modern relationships in Nigeria.
