‘‘She told me not to leave” – Lady shares how one night at her cousin’s place landed her in prison

A Nigerian woman has told the tragic tale of how a straightforward trip to her cousin’s house became a nightmare that resulted in accusations, loss, and over a year in jail. A user going by the handle @Awele claimed in a widely shared TikTok post that she had only intended to stay for three days when she visited her cousin’s sister. Her cousin convinced her to spend an additional night even though she had intended to leave; she had no idea that this choice would permanently alter her life. Her father and her cousin’s father had a long-standing rivalry that neither of them was aware of. She said that the problem had no bearing on their bond and never had an impact on their relationship. That night, armed robbers broke into the house and demanded their phones. She said she immediately handed over hers, but her cousin refused, explaining that robbers had stolen from her before and she would not give it up again. The situation quickly turned violent. The attackers stabbed her cousin. Her cousin was rushed to the hospital, where they spent two days hoping she would survive. Sadly, she died on the third day. Instead of mourning together, the tragedy took a darker turn. The deceased’s parents accused the lady of orchestrating the attack, claiming she was sent to kill their daughter because of the old family feud. She was arrested and detained for 11 months. During that time, she missed her graduation, while her family struggled financially, borrowing money to fight her case. She described watching her father cry as the most painful part of the entire ordeal.
