On Thursday, February 12, there was a minor drama at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja as security personnel allegedly tried to detain Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, following his arrival from Cairo, Egypt.
El-Rufai insisted on a written invitation before he would go with the operators, according to his media assistant Muyiwa Adekeye. Adekeye claimed in a tweet on his X handle that the agents then took the former governor’s foreign passport away from one of his assistants.
“Security agents today attempted to arrest Malam Nasir @elrufai as he arrived on a flight from Cairo. Malam El- Rufai declined to follow them without a formal Invitation. They however snatched his international passport from an aide.’’he wrote
Security officials have not yet provided an official confirmation of the occurrence as of Thursday night.
This comes a day after El-Rufai told BBC Hausa that he may be arrested in Nigeria at any time during an interview. He charged that legislators were under pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the party or risk political repercussions.
