Tensions have erupted in Rivers State following reports that the Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Hon. Eugene Chita Epelle attacked an adolescent girl for exposing the bad condition of a government secondary school in her community.
The event reportedly occurred after the little girl posted images and videos online depicting the deteriorating condition of the school building, bringing public attention to the issue.
The affected school is in the Oduoku Community of Ahoada West. The community also houses the council chairman and the wife of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
In a video that has now gone viral, the adolescent pleaded with local officials to intervene immediately and improve learning environment for children.
“So as we all know, the future of this country is in the hands of these youths. And if they don’t have a solid background in education, then our future will be jeopardized.
So we are calling on the chairman, Honorable Eugene Chita Epelle, the deputy chairman of Ahoada West, to come to the rescue of these ch1ldren. They need school chairs. They need boards.
They need windows. They need general renovations. The school don’t have electricity. They don’t even have teachers. Before now, they had over 1,000 students in the school but right now. They cannot even boast of 100.”
The film exposed damaged infrastructure, a lack of classroom furniture, no electricity, and a teacher shortage.
According to residents, the school originally had a huge student population but has seen a significant decrease in enrolment as a result of its current situation.
Shortly after the video went viral, claims surfaced that the chairman had accosted and manhandled the girl over her post.
