“President Tinubu did not make Buhari president. I did” – Presidential hopeful, Rotimi Amaechi says

Former Rotimi Amaechi has challenged claims made by Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the 2015 presidential election, insisting that he played the key role in the emergence of late Muhammadu Buhari as president.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Friday, May 22, Amaechi rejected Tinubu’s well-known pre-2023 claim that he single-handedly made Buhari president. Tinubu had previously used the claim while defending his own presidential ambition with the phrase “Emi lo kan,” meaning “It is my turn.”

Amaechi explained that he chose not to publicly respond at the time because he was serving in Buhari’s cabinet. However, the former Rivers State governor maintained that Tinubu’s account of events was inaccurate.

According to Amaechi, his role as Director-General of Buhari’s 2014 presidential campaign placed him at the centre of the political effort that eventually brought the former president to power.

“When I was a minister, Tinubu was claiming he made Buhari president, and I couldn’t respond because that was suicidal. Buhari could have fired me because I was still serving as a minister.

Tinubu didn’t make Buhari president. Not only that I was the DG of the campaign, everyone knows that I did all the battle, not Tinubu” he said
