Police Vow to Punish Officers Involved in Assault of Portable

According to a report by PM News Nigeria on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, the Ogun State Police Command has announced that it will investigate allegations that controversial singer Portable was assaulted and dehumanised while in police custody. The announcement follows widespread attention on social media after a video surfaced showing the singer handcuffed and visibly distressed inside a police station.

The footage shows Portable seated on a chair in handcuffs, tearfully pleading for help and lamenting that he has no one to turn to. “My mum is late. It’s only God I have; I have no one else,” he could be heard saying, as he appeared emotionally shaken. The video sparked speculation that the singer may have been physically mistreated by police officers during his detention.

Portable was reportedly arrested following a petition by one of his alleged baby mamas, Ashabi, who claimed that the singer had slapped and physically assaulted her after a disagreement. While the exact details of the petition remain unclear, the video quickly circulated online, drawing public criticism and prompting calls for accountability.

Confirming the arrest, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that the authorities are taking the allegations of assault seriously. “Yes, he was arrested, and he is currently in our custody, but the issue of utmost concern is the alleged assault at the station,” Babaseyi said. He emphasised that the police do not condone the mistreatment of suspects under any circumstances, regardless of their public profile.

Babaseyi added that an official investigation has been launched to identify and hold accountable any officers involved in the alleged misconduct. “We do not condone videoing suspects, and we do not expose their faces publicly. No one should be treated in such a manner, irrespective of who they are,” he said.

The spokesperson assured that officers found responsible for any wrongdoing will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for disciplinary action. “The investigation is ongoing, and once the officers involved are identified, they will face the consequences according to the law. That process has already begun,” he noted.
