The Cross River State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding an alleged unauthorized hernia surgery performed on a 60-year-old man identified simply as Ukpan at a private clinic in Ekori, Yakurr Local Government Area of the state.

The investigation followed reports that the patient developed complications after undergoing the procedure.

Patient Reportedly Developed Complications

Preliminary findings by the police indicate that Ukpan underwent the hernia procedure on September 8 and was discharged from the clinic the same day.

However, on September 11, at about 4 p.m., the patient was reportedly taken to Ugep General Hospital by Bassey Otu Bassey, 33, after he allegedly developed complications.

While at the hospital at about 9 p.m., members of the patient’s family reportedly attempted to mob Bassey after raising concerns about his professional status and alleged involvement in the procedure.

Police officers reportedly intervened, prevented the mob action and took Bassey into protective custody at the Ugep Police Division.

Suspect Claims He Is a Theatre Assistant

During preliminary questioning, Bassey reportedly told investigators that he was a theatre assistant who carried out the procedure in the absence of his principal.

However, the police said they were yet to establish his professional status, qualifications or whether he was authorised to perform the procedure.

Confirming the incident to journalists, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said efforts were ongoing to verify Bassey’s professional credentials and determine the circumstances under which the surgery was conducted.

The command is also investigating the nature and cause of the patient’s reported complications and whether they were connected to the procedure.

Police Warn Against Jungle Justice

Akata stressed that no conclusion had been reached regarding possible criminal liability or the cause of the patient’s condition pending the outcome of the investigation and relevant medical and professional findings.

The police spokesperson urged members of the public to desist from mob action and jungle justice, assuring that anyone found culpable based on credible evidence would be made to face the law.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to establish what happened and determine whether any offence was committed in connection with the medical procedure.
