Pakistan and Iran Move Closer to Agreement as Military Chief Visits Tehran

According to a report by Al Jazeera on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff has embarked on a diplomatic visit to Tehran aimed at narrowing differences between Pakistan and Iran and advancing discussions toward a formal agreement, according to Iranian state-linked media reports.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (ISNA) reported that talks in Tehran are currently focused on a draft framework covering broader strategic cooperation, with discussions also addressing specific details and confidence-building measures intended to serve as guarantees between both sides.

ISNA noted that the draft agreement has already helped reduce existing gaps in negotiations, but further progress would require a reduction in external tensions in the region.

“The Iranian text is being discussed in Tehran regarding the overarching framework, some details, and confidence-building measures as guarantees,” the outlet stated.

It further added that “the submitted text has narrowed the gaps to some extent, but further reductions require an end to the temptation for war from Washington”.

The report said the purpose of the visit by Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, is to continue diplomatic engagement and bring both sides closer to a mutual understanding that could eventually lead to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries.

Officials involved in the discussions are said to be working on resolving outstanding issues while maintaining focus on regional stability and security cooperation.

The development comes amid broader efforts by regional powers to strengthen bilateral relations and reduce geopolitical tensions across the Middle East and South Asia.

If successful, the ongoing negotiations could pave the way for enhanced security coordination, economic cooperation, and structured diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Tehran, according to the report.

Neither Pakistan nor Iran has officially released full details of the discussions, but both sides have previously expressed interest in expanding cooperation in areas including border security and counterterrorism efforts.
