According to reports, the Muslim community in Oyo State has rejected terrorists’ demand that Sharia rule be implemented as a condition for the release of abducted teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.

The group condemned the kidnappers’ activities, stating that terrorism, kidnapping, and extortion are not acceptable in Islam.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Alhaji Ishaq Sanvni, and Secretary-General, Alhaji Murisiku Siyanbade, the Muslim community condemned the abductors’ demands as criminal and antithetical to Islamic principles.

According to the group, the kidnappers’ attempts to excuse their crimes through faith constitute a distortion of Islam.

“Islam forbids kidnapping, terrorism and the extortion of innocent citizens. Legitimate Sharia promotes justice, peace and the sanctity of human life, values that stand in direct opposition to the activities of criminal groups,” 

The association stated that the perpetrators could not claim to be acting on behalf of Muslims or Islam.

“Terrorists do not represent Islamic values and cannot speak for Muslims,” the statement added.

The group also quoted Chapter 5 Verse 32 of the Holy Qur’an, stating that Islam prioritises the protection of human life.

The development comes as public and private schools in Oyo State’s 33 local government areas are reportedly closing in solidarity with the abducted teachers and students.

On May 15, the abductors reportedly targeted three schools in the Esiele, Yawota, and Alawusa towns, kidnapping both teachers and students.

According to reports, before releasing the captives, the kidnappers requested the release of arrested terrorist commanders, the payment of a ransom, two Hilux vehicles, and the adoption of Sharia law.

The requests have prompted significant alarm and condemnation among numerous groups and interests.
