According to a post made by football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X on July 7, Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has described his country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign as disappointing after their elimination from the tournament.
Fernandes admitted Portugal had set their sights on lifting the World Cup trophy but ultimately fell well short of that objective.
“Our World Cup has been negative. The target was to win the Cup and we didn’t get to the final,” Fernandes said.
Portugal entered the tournament as one of the favourites and progressed into the knockout stages, with experienced stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes leading the squad. However, their hopes of claiming a first World Cup title ended following their elimination.
Fernandes’ comments echoed the disappointment expressed by several members of the Portuguese squad after the defeat, with Cristiano Ronaldo also admitting he was saddened by the outcome while insisting he had given everything for his country.
The Manchester United midfielder’s remarks shows the high expectations within the Portugal camp, where anything short of winning the tournament was viewed as falling below the team’s ambitions.
