A man who called for the firing of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle on social media has generated a lot of discussion.

Following Nigeria’s 4-2 semi-final loss to Morocco, the host country of AFCON 2025, this call was made.

The user was disappointed that Chelle had not prepared the team for penalty shootouts after losing to DR Congo on penalties in the World Cup qualifiers. Samuel Chukwueze’s failed penalty against Morocco infuriated the X user, who went by the name Dr. Penking.

Dr Penking said: “You would think that after losing to DR Congo via penalties, he would invest his time into training for penalties and discover the team’s best penalty players, but no, he threw history to the wind and trained only for open play again. Time for Eric Chelle to be returned to Marlians. He is not serious.”

Nigerians have expressed their opinions in a contentious online debate sparked by this comment.

See reactions below;

Victor expressed surprise: “Because he Lost one Game ?? True True, average Nigerian is a Fool. You behave like a woman, na only present you dey remember.”

Jekson added: “He needs more coaches to work with him. We don’t have a set piece coach and I’m sure you’re not aware. The goalkeeper coach is our set piece coach. U can’t win afcon anymore without proper planning. Blame the NFF. They need to start investing. This is no longer 1996 or 2013. Things have changed.”

Mike noted: “Omo, Nigerians and entitlement na 5&6🤣🤣🤣. You guys just believe Nigeria should be winning in everything giving the condition is favourable or not. It’s a tournament, don’t be too desperate… Well done Super Eagles.”

Abidatu weighed in: “Much as any good team can loose a shoot out, @EricCheller should take full responsibility for d loss. Imagine @NGSuperEagles going ahead in d 2nd spot kick.Its only about ensuring ur best 3 takers finish d rest. But no,he immediately sent in #Chukwueze to gv hope back to d host.”

Safari defended Chelle, stating: “Don’t blame the man. He’s done well. Will he come to the field to play the Pen? See the lackadaisical attitude Chukwueze displayed while playing the penalty? Some of the guys no serious at all.”

Bolade highlighted tactical confusion: “The most confusing thing is that we acatully played like we wanted penalty … we defended for 90 minutes like penalty was a sure banker for us .. So chuwukueze was the plan ..? Against Bonnoue ke ..? Kepper wey don dive before Bruno play him pk .. 😂😂”
