A 45-year-old woman, Mrs Mary Yaduyan, has reportedly d!ed a few hours after giving birth to quintuplets — five baby boys — at a specialist hospital in Akure.
According to reports, Mary had been childless for more than 14 years before successfully conceiving through an IVF procedure in 2025.
She was said to have d!ed from complications linked to a pulmonary embolism shortly after delivering the babies through a caesarean section. The tragic incident reportedly occurred about four hours after what had initially been described as a successful delivery.
The hospital, known for handling multiple births, was thrown into mourning following the unexpected d3ath. Reports indicated that the woman had attended regular antenatal care throughout the pregnancy without major complications.
A lead consultant at the hospital, who spoke anonymously to Hope Newspaper, expressed sadness over the loss, describing it as heartbreaking after the long journey to motherhood.
The doctor revealed that Mary previously had uterine fibroids, which were surgically removed two years before the IVF procedure. He added that the pregnancy progressed smoothly until around the 31st week, when she reportedly experienced premature rupture of membranes and was placed under close medical supervision.
According to the consultant, the medical team adopted conservative management strategies to safely prolong the pregnancy while carefully monitoring for infections and other possible complications.
