Nigerian detainees in Ethiopia are celebrating after the Federal Government and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia signed a Prisoner Transfer Agreement (PTA) for those condemned in the country.
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Foreign Affairs, secured the arrangement, which will result in the return of over 100 Nigerians from Ethiopian jails.
Magnus Eze, the media aide to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, explained in a statement that under the legal framework, sentenced persons who are nationals of either country may be transferred to their home country to serve the remainder of their sentences, subject to agreed-upon conditions and applicable laws.
Four Nigerian convicts died while the discussions, court vetting, and final ratification process were still underway.
A video published online shows Nigerian detainees cheering after the agreement was signed.
